Committee For Lorne

The Committee For Lorne is a community organisation that connects and unites a cross-section of the Lorne’s leaders, businesses, community groups, residents and home owners to work together to ensure a sustainable future for the Lorne and district community;  economically, environmentally and socially.

We provide a strong voice for the community and advocate on its behalf in dealings with Surf Coast Shire, Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority and the Victorian Government.

Promoting and enhancing community, cultural and economic assets, while conserving our unique environment.

Our Aspirations

These strategies are the main areas on which we need to focus to carry out our mission.

1. Defining and solving issues that put the natural environment at risk.
   We will look for ways of ameliorating climate change and offsetting any environmental downsides associated with the present and future human use.

2. Leading through collaboration
   We will encourage and facilitate cooperation and collaboration between local groups and clubs, full and parttime residents, and other organisations with an interest in Lorne, so that Lorne operates effectively

3. Building a vibrant and sustainable local economy
   We will implement actions that reflect Lorne’s Defining Features and so create a local sustainable economy and economic advantage that will result in extended and new business opportunities and more jobs.

4. Creating a community for everyone
   Collectively we will work to make Lorne an even more welcoming and attractive place in which to live. We will address the needs and aspirations of our full and part-time residents including young people, families, the working group and our senior citizens

5. Accommodating Lorne’s future
   Our dual goals for significantly larger permanent population and a more normal demographic spread across all age groups will require innovative ways of having land and housing costs match the range of income levels of those people who work in Lorne. Further, we will need to find yet other creative strategies to house the hundreds of seasonal workers who are needed from November to Easter by the businesses of Lorne, while ensuring we continue to provide the social, cultural, recreational and material infrastructure needed for a permanent and part time community. 6. Encouraging more visitors who stay longer
   Lorne has been a popular holiday destination from its inception as a settlement. Firstly came the guest houses and campgrounds, then holiday cottages, and more recently campers and caravans, Airbnb, and larger holiday homes and units. The challenge is to get these regular and other visitors to come more often and stay longer. In this way we will make more use of services and amenities, while balancing the business highs and lows of the seasons.
